Just thought I would report on a project my friend [Michael Lindholm](https://liero3d.blogspot.com/) has been working on for a while now. Its [Liero but in 3D](https://liero3d.blogspot.com/2011/03/ladys-and-gents.html)! As some of you may know I have dabbled with making a remake of Liero [several times in the past](/posts/lieroxna/).



Anyways, it looks like its coming along nicely. He's gone for a voxel-like engine, with screen space ambient occlusion for shading. Personally I think the effect works really well for the game. Check it out:

Well its been quite a while since my last progress report. I have mostly been sleeping (well 4 hours of it anyways).



So progress is coming along nicely STILL no gameplay tho :S

So far you can shoot and destroy the enemies and then collect thier giblets before they become part of the terrain. The idea is that you can then shoot those giblets back at the enemies. Take alook if you are interested:

Oh I just noticed I left some debug sliders on there I was using to try and hone the bloom levels. Have a play with them if you want.

Okay its been about 6 hours since my last update, and I have been working pretty much solid apart from an hour lunchbreak when I went for a wander into town.



Ive made quite abit of progress with the core bits of the engine including the physics particle systems and the destructible terrain.

Theres still no game really, just a pretty tech demo. Im hoping the gameplay will come next :)

Im going to have abit of a break now, get some food wind down a little then its going to be a loooooong night ahead for me!

Okay I have had an hour now and I have spent it trying to come up with an art style and game ideas. I really like the World Of Goo art style, plus im hoping the shilloette like style will be much easier for my poor drawing ability :P

As for gameplay, "Enemies as Weapons" instantly reminded me of the flash game Boom Stick for some reason. So in that game you shoot enemies flying by overhead with your shotgun. You then run around and pick up ammo that drops from them. You then use that ammo to shoot more of them, simples!

The great thing about this idea is that I have done work in the past on LieroXNA and Worms 2 Mobile so hopefully I can use some of the experience I have gleamed from doing those games to make this one :)

With design out of the way now, I think im going to setup my environment and get cracking!

Firstly its great to hear from someone who appreciates my work. Im surprised that people know about my old little project. Unfortunately it is a dead project now :(

I actually took the game to a high standard, and took it to eidos publishers in Wimbledon to see if they were interested in the game. Unfortunately, despite the backing of my employers Eidos werent interested in an XBLA game not after their other XBLA disasters. From that point on I lost heart in the project, I dont know why but I didnt want to continue it on any more.

Whats worse is I have actually lost everything! I have lost the source code and the binary everything, I cant believe my own stupidity. All I have left is a power point presentation and some screenshots :(

The game play was actually very good fun, we played quite a few 4-man games in the office.

I may pick up the project again some point in the future, but it wont be for profit, it will be for fun.

I just checked out your 3d-liero project and I must say it looks very interesting! How are you doing the 3d destructibility? Voxels with a polygon mapping algorithm? Have you ever heard of voxlap? [https://advsys.net/ken/voxlap.htm](https://advsys.net/ken/voxlap.htm) very interesting project from a while back, was very interested for a while, was thinking of woking on a voxel engine for my university, but decided against it in the end, the complexity is immense.

Well anyways, im starting to ramble, its good to see you continuing on with liero and I wish you best of luck, ill be watching with keen interest.

Mike</address>Well the result of this is I have been digging around and have found "some" old source code, its not complete, but over the coming weeks im going to take a look at it and see if I can get it in a state where I can post it up here, it would be a shame to let this one rot.
